What is Functional Medicine, and How can it help you?

Avantir Wellness - April 11, 2022 Array

Do you wish for:

👉 Greater energy?

👉 Better sleep?

👉 Less stress?

Many of us struggle with poor energy levels and lack of sleep. Traditional medicine  tends to focus on treating illness and resolving symptoms, instead of preventing disease.

Functional medicine on the other hand, is a holistic and patient-centred approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of a disease. Functional Medicine is different from the traditional disease-centred approach in that it addresses the whole person and not just their symptoms.

You might have heard of the quote, “Health is not just the absence of disease.” This statement perfectly describes functional medicine’s approach.

Why do we need functional medicine?

There has been an increase in people suffering from chronic diseases. In the conventional approach, every person is treated the same way. Conditions are identified by recognising symptoms, and all patients with a disease are prescribed similar drug-based therapies.

Functional medicine avoids a one-size-fits-all approach. One condition can have many causes. For example, there is no single cause of depression. It may be hormonal, linked to a vitamin or mineral deficiency or even be a side effect of antibiotic use. The precise manifestation of each cause depends on the individual’s genes, environment, and lifestyle.

Functional medicine thus aims to address the root cause of a patient’s problems rather than suppressing their symptoms.

It recognises the importance of drug treatments and dietary, lifestyle, emotional, and even social impacts on health and disease.

Importantly, functional medicine does not reject conventional medicine. Instead, it uses conventional medicine as a foundation for adding dietary, environmental and genetic factors in the management and prevention of chronic disease.

The Functional Medicine Approach to Treatment

The practise of functional medicine involves these essential components:

  • We establish a mutually empowering partnership between coach and client, free of bias and judgement. Patients who are active participants in developing their therapeutic plan feel more in control of their well-being and are more likely to make sustained lifestyle changes to improve their health.
  • We analyse the client’s history and story and relate it to their current problems. The client’s account becomes the foundation of the treatment plan, which is the map of your journey towards better health.
  • After that, we organise the clinical imbalances and underlying disease causes in a Functional Medicine Matrix. We use this matrix to look at the family history, triggering events, the body’s systems, symptoms, and risk factors, and see their story about why they got sick and how to get better.
  • We then identify and address modifiable lifestyle factors that have a tremendous impact on your health or illness. Some major modifiable lifestyle factors are:
    • The quality of the air you breathe
    • The quality of the water you use
    • The quality of the food you eat
    • The type of diet you follow
    • Your level of physical activity
    • Your amount and quality of sleep
    • Previous and ongoing exposure to toxins
    • Traumas you have experienced (physical, mental and emotional)
  • Lastly, we provide personalised recommendations to guide our clients on their journey to improved health and wellness.
